I don't know what to say about this book. I don't think there was any attempt to make this seem believable at all. I rarely give a book a one-star rating, but this one deserves it. ...more

Dana, a black girl living in California in the 1970s, suddenly finds herself in a completely different place. A miraculous force transported her to Maryland at the beginning of the nineteenth century. She gets to know Rufus, a white boy from a nearby plantation. She saves his life, but he gets stuck in the past and, being black, is treated as an enslaved person. After some time, she can go back, and the next time, she brings her white boyfriend with her. Each time Rufus is in danger, Dana is tra ...more

5 stars. This was brutal and really hard to read most of the time but damn was it so fantastic.

I don't think I can ever do this book justice so I'm going to keep this really brief. The writing was great and I could kick myself for just now reading a book by Octavia Butler! In her first trip, Dana saves Tom's son, Rufus, and quickly returns to her own time. After a second trip where Dana saves Rufus' life again, she realizes a few things. First, Rufus is her ...more

This was a 5-star read for me and I highly recommend the audiobook (where was the audio when I "read" this in high school?!)! For my review, I feel like the most of synopsis does it great justice--this is the first science fiction written by a black woman. Astounding. 🌠 This combination of slave memoir, fantasy, and historical fiction is a novel of rich literary complexity. Every time Dana is thrown back in time, she has no idea what scenario she will find herself in. More time passes in the pas ...more
