This book really surprised me. I mean, I heard it's really good, but I didn't expect to like it that much.
I had serious doubts if this would be a book for me. First of all, I've never liked the time travel theme. I don't know why, but it just never worked for me. Still, I can't say that this was my favorite part of the book either, but at least I didn't mind it. I'm not a huge fan of historical novels either, they just aren't for me. Dana Franklin is a black woman in America in the seventies. She finds herself living her life with her husband who is white, but then she is catapulted back to antebellum south. The story goes back and gives a historic look at the way slaves were treated. Dana also ends up discovering some things about her ancestry that surprise her. I finished reading this book, in 2017 post-Charlottesville, written by a woman in the 1970s, about a black woman, going back in time to the early 1800s, pre-Civil War, via audiobook recorded and performed in the late 1990s. Forgive the pun, but it's going to take some time to wrap my thoughts around this one.

I really enjoyed this book. I feel it is mostly historical fiction with a bit of fantasy or science fiction elements interspersed - the time travel of Dana and Kevin.
