Despite the difficulty in making time travel novels seem realistic, this book was brilliant. And that was because this was far more than a science-fiction style of time travel story. What made this book was the emotional aspect, the characters and the description of the sheer horror of the slave period in the ante bellum south. This book was written in 1979, but it doesn't feel that way. I loved every minute. I've said and heard other people say what they would do if they were able to go back in time as a POC, and after reading this I have to say that we don't know what the hell we're talking about.
The things our ancestors had to endure is mindboggling and atrocious. There were moments when Octavia described a whipping, someone being put in chains, ect... that I found tears in my eyes.

Excellent book. Loved the mix of time travel, social issues and historical fiction. Also really liked that the ending was not toed up in a bow. Left the reader with a lot to think about. It is still rumbling around in my mind - lots of noodling before any conclusions will evolve (if ever).
