What Members Thought

Despite the difficulty in making time travel novels seem realistic, this book was brilliant. And that was because this was far more than a science-fiction style of time travel story. What made this book was the emotional aspect, the characters and the description of the sheer horror of the slave period in the ante bellum south. In particular, the obsessive character of Rufus was just amazing. You got so involved in the story and the characters that you completely forgot that the premise of the s

This was a 4-star read but it's hard to say I loved it because it was a really difficult book to read, due to the story. As Dana tries to keep her ancestor alive by getting ripped back in time, she learns what it means to be a slave & how a person has to adjust a mindset in order to survive. Her thoughts and feelings are engrossing as she's a modern woman trying to adjust to different viewpoints, and the way she sees things are fascinating. It's an important book that definitely leaves you think

I read this as part of a bookgroup and worried that I wouldn't like it since it is partly science fiction. No worries - I thoroughly enjoyed the book. All in our group agreed that even though we of course knew about slavery, this book gave us further insight into the past.
