2.5 stars-- It's not you, Jane Austen, it's me. Everyone else loves you. I'm pretty sure that even uttering the words "tedious" and "inconsequential minutiae" when speaking of your works qualifies as heresy. I thought P & P was pretty good. But reading this book was like slogging through a thick swamp. There were several interesting moments and the characters were well drawn, so I have to give credit for that. And I do have several more Austen books on my shelf to read yet, so I haven't abandone ...more

This is a satire, but it was hard for me to appreciate it without having read what she was satirizing. I've read a fair amount of victorian literature and tend to like it. To me this was more like an inside joke or Austen venting some frustration, rather than a planned out, intricate story like many victorian novels.

Maybe I'll try this again to see if I get it in the future.

This book read much easier for me than other Austen novels. I liked the setup and the plot. The heroine, Catherine is a very well-developed character. The only complaint I have is that the ending seemed rather rushed. The conclusion of the book took maybe a chapter. I think it could have been extended and developed more thoroughly. All in all a good and easy read.

So for some reason this was the one Austen novel I never picked up. Ever. And actually, I'm kinda glad I did take so long to read it. It's like discovering Austen all over again, and now I'm determined to fit in a reread of everything this year somehow. I really enjoyed this, much more than I thought I would have. The plot/blurb has never really grabbed me, so I've just kept putting it off every year. Everything about this book was lovely. ...more

My favorite thing in this novel was how passionately both Catherine and Henry felt about novels. The story itself wasn't that exciting but I enjoyed Austen's characters. Maybe I should finally read some of her other works too. ...more
