I made sure to read this book during Banned Book Week 2019 because this has been banned/challenged. Even though it was challenged for the contains and themes this book has such a powerful message about rape and sexual assault and the troubles of starting high school. Okay, so now this is one of my favorite books of all time.
I think a lot of it is timing - I really needed to read this book right now where I am personally (even the fact that it is set in Syracuse, where I'm currently living).
This book is powerful yet subtle in its language. And most importantly, it tells a good story. It's not the author's intention to preach or make any judgments on the characters in this book, but it is informing and realistic. I guess I also like it because it seems to be m ...more
