This book is a hard one in many ways. Heart-wrenching and straight up scary what he goes through as a boy. If you feel nothing after reading this, you have to be fairly cold-hearted. The heartbreak of being isolated from his family, the ups and downs of loving your parents but never knowing if they love you, or worse, might want you dead. That a mother can take delight in her child's suffering ....Woah....

This book also hits home on a personal level. There are times I can relate. The mother who

This book was so sad; it practically had me crying the whole way through. If anyone knows of any more work from this author I would love to read it. It had me crying like a baby when the little boy had to endure that stench in the bathroom. And his brothers and dad are such terrible people. When the dad left he should have taken the child but instead he left him there. Terrible doesn't begin to cover it. ...more

How do you rate a book like this? To give it five stars for the courage of David to express his life of abuse at the hands of his mother seems to condone the acts themselves. Poignant and shocking, this is the story of a young boy victimised by his emotionally unstable mother. As a mother myself, I cannot imagine bringing harm to my child, and reading this made me so sad for the state our world is in. The author is a hero for bringing his story to light, illustrating the tragedy that is child abuse to make people aware that it could be happening in their own neighbor hoods and giving hope for the victims, letting them know that they are not alone.

This book was heartbreaking. I couldn't stomach the abuse that this poor child endured. A great story of strength and survival. I recommend that all three books are read, to see the whole life of Dave Pelzer. ...more
