This is a quick read, but no less poignant for its brevity. It is an unabashed look at the life of a woman as a slave. In a time when it was not only acceptable but expected for people to own other human beings, Harriet is the slave of the town doctor, a respected man. She does not write her account for herself, but for the other women still in bondage, after spending seven years in hiding in an attic in order to escape the brutality of her "master".
