With "Number the Stars", Lois Lowry has written a book that can paint a picture of the Danish history under the Nazi rule for young children. At around 150 pages in a not-too-small print, this book has exactly the right length, and it's got exactly the right scope, too.

Everything we experience is seen through the eyes of ten-years-old Annemarie. The soldiers scare her, she doesn't like that there's not much variation in food, she's got to watch out for her younger sister. Later on, when life bec

I thought this was such a great book. Once I got started it was hard to put down. This is a story about friendship and doing the right thing during a time where it can be a bit scary. I thought this was a great book about a ten year old girl named Annemarie who has a best friend named Ellen and that Ellen and her family are Jewish. This book takes place in Denmark during World War II and Ellen and her family are at risk when the the Germans fully take over. Annemarie and her family take the risk ...more

A Friend told me to read this because I was talking about other Holocaust books that I have read. I was amazed by the story, the characters, and the authors story. What a good read.

I had not read this book in my elementary years, but it was one that came up over and over again on the top lists of middle grade reads. I don't know how or why it was never one I picked up. This is a beautiful read with such a masterful way of telling a difficult story in a way appropriate for the age of the intended audience. I have been wanting to read this for years and finally did it. Number the Stars is a quick read following the emotional journey of a young Danish girl during WWII. I love stories of hope in darkness and that is exactly what this is. I learned interesting facts about the resistance efforts in Denmark during the war and have gained a deep respect for the country and people who banded together to save their friends and neighbors in the face of great evil and danger.
