Empire Falls by Richard Russo is a brilliant look into a small town in Maine which somehow manages to hold on even after the downfall of its manufacturing base. There is a wonderful cast of characters, too many to mention, but these two are my favorites:
Miles Robey - He leaves college and returns to Empire Falls to run the local diner. He essentially becomes an indentured servant to the owner, Mrs. Whiting, whose family owned the entire town.

Hooray for finishing the oldest book on my GR TBR list. Great book, well crafted. Well developed characters who I got to know really well over the past two weeks.
