What Members Thought
I have mixed feelings about this book. There are things I think it did really well and I like much of the world-building, but there are things I disliked and things I feel weren't well-written.
3 good things:
- The world-building is good. Just enough to get the idea across - colonization, etc. - without writing pages and pages of why humans are leaving earth. It's not what this story is about so who cares?
- The relationships Todd builds with other characters seems to grow at a natural pace. He s ...more

This was very interesting. When I started and was a couple of chapters in, I wasn't at all sure that it was particularly my cup of tea, but I figured I would give it a chance. Then all of a sudden I was halfway through the book and it was two in the morning! Somewhere along the line I was sucked in.

The concept of this story intrigued me, but the book itself had quite a few elements that greatly annoyed me:
1. Non-standard spelling: Words like "tho" and "celebrayshun" almost made me quit reading by the end of Chapter 2. I presume the author used these words to show that the narrator is functionally illiterate, but there's no explanation as to why he has no trouble spelling other difficult words (like "poison" and "squinting").
2. Negative religious stereotypes: The creepiest villain is the to ...more

A wonderful little read. I've been reading a lot of dystopia lately, and this is some good stuff. I was surprised by the plot twists and found the premise believable.
What got me into this book is the idea of the talking dog. I wasn't disappointed with that aspect of the book - there was enough of it to be charming without disrupting the arc of the story.
I deducted a star for the cliffhanger. It's not OK for a book to end on a cliffhanger. It's OK when some uncertainty is left or a problem isn't ...more
