In New World things are different. Animals can talk. Men can hear each other’s “NOISE.” Todd Hewitt is just a month from his 13th birthday, when he’ll become a man, and share the secret of the odd, isolated settlement – Prentisstown – he calls home. But a chance discovery results in his fleeing for his life, accompanied only by his dog, Manchee.

Todd is many ways a typical young teen – full of anxiety about growing up, certain he knows much more than

I thought at first that the language in this book would bother me. There are a lot of intentionally misspelled words (spelled phonetically), and lots of "ain't"s. Once I got going though I found the story so intriguing that I was racing through it, managing to finish this almost-500-page book in only 2 days. The only disappointment is that I guessed the explanations for just about everything long before the big "reveals". Still very enjoyable though. ...more

I really liked it! As soon as I started reading, I ordered the whole series for my library. It is definitley bleak, and unrelentingly depressing....but very good. :) I was recommended this series when I was looking for boy books for a book club of mine that would read easily and quickly....I can't believe I had never heard of it! Since I suck at conventional reviews (plus, someone else will do an awesomely in depth one anyways), I'll just list my pros and cons...

Pros-
1. Fast read. Not only is i

I hadn't expected to enjoy this book as much as I did. It was a real page turner. At first I thought I would struggle with the language - Todd, the narrator, is not educated and as it is written in the first person there are odd spellings and turns of phrase. But I got used to it and barely noticed it by the end. I loved the developing relationship between Todd and Viola, and I absolutely loved Manchee. Throughout you got a true sense of the panic and exhaustion as they all run from the army whi ...more

Todd Hewitt is the only boy in a town of men. Ever since the settlers were infected with the Noise germ, Todd can hear everything the men think, and they hear everything he thinks. Todd is just a month away from becoming a man, but in the midst of the cacophony, he knows that the town is hiding something from him -- something so awful Todd is forced to flee with only his dog, whose simple, loyal voice he hears too. With hostile men from the town in pursuit, the two stumble upon a strange and eer ...more
