Interesting concept but the book lacked a certain depth that I was seeking. My earlier experience with dystopian literature was with the Matched series, so I was not surprised at the way this book was written. However, like with most books in this genre, this had its own peculiarities, which made it an interesting read.
One grouse that I have with this book however, is the fact that it ends abruptly. I know that it is part of a quartet, so I am hoping that there is something about the main chara ...more

So I reread this book since I knew the movie was in theaters and I wanted to refresh the book in my mind before I watch the movie. I remembered liking this book a lot when we had to read it in 7th grade. Upon rereading it I realized just how much I still love it. The plot is fantastic and extremely original, at least to me. I know we've got tons of dystopian novels now a days but even if this book came out now I'd still argue it's phenomenal originality, because it's just different from all the

I was going through my library, searching for what to read next, when I spotted The Giver. Having fond memories of when I had previously read it, I decided to read it again. I am glad that I did.
The Giver is an excellent read. Jonus, a 12 year old boy, lives in a ordered society. One that has rules for everything. The communities lives have been programmed for generations, so they know no difference.
This book has some elements of, the Truman Show, Logan's Run and Orwell's 1984.

I honestly didn't like it as much as I hoped I would. The idea behind it is wonderful of course and leaves the interpretation to the reader, but since it was hyped so immensely I thought it would be grander. The author took great pains to explain the rules of the society described, but then nothing came of it. The ending was unssatisfying - I felt there was so much left to develop.

I just re-read this book, for the third time and it still strikes me as profound. I can't imagine what I took from it at age 9 or 10 when I first read the book in 4th grade, I think it was, but i'm pretty sure I've taken quite a different outlook on life and matured considerably since then, as I'm now almost 31. But the book is still thought provoking and profound in it's simplicity and that old cliche that ignorance is bliss is certanly challenged and exploited and we're reminded that the imper

I read this one a while back just after it was first published. I still enjoyed it on the re-read. There is a lot to think about in this book, and for a while after it is read. Although aimed at young adults this is a solid enough read for older adults. And, although written more than twenty years ago, the ideas contained in this book are still relevant today.
Overall, a solid read that gives the reader much to think about.
