It somehow just passed me by, this book and all its sequels. I only picked it up because of the movie, and because it worked for a reading challenge. I'm wondering what took it so long to be adapted, because it's such wonderful visual material. It's also powerful, in a silent sort of way. I got attached to the main character, Jonas, even though for most of the book it didn't seem like I would eventually care what happened to him. I like its concept, of a memory keeper, of Sameness. It was quite

I'm not a huge fan of dystopian novels. Frankly, I could see them turning into reality if the wrong person is given power. They scare the crud out of me. Having said that, this is a very well-written novel. Lois Lowry did an excellent job of describing this "perfect world" and the changes Jonas goes through as he becomes the Receiver. I was very impressed with the writing and the tale--but it still scared the crud out of me.

It's a rather weird story and I have to admit, I felt a little let down by the ending. But it IS the first book of a four book series so perhaps the ending wasn't what it appears to be.
Definitely heavy for a YA book. The kind of book that could be used to teach in class or for a reading discussion. Even for adult book clubs. ...more
