What a wonderful book! I couldn't put it down, even though I had just picked it up to scan to see if I wanted to read it next. It's well written, interesting and thought-provoking. The characters are real, the society scarily believable.
The inside flap says it makes us reexamine our innermost beliefs. I thought that rather far-reaching for a children's book, but I really did find myself stopping to think about society as I read the text. I also was continually surprised by my assumptions about t ...more

I'd read this book before I think but couldn't remember it so I decided to read it again. I liked it a lot and couldn't imagine a world where you can't see color or have feelings and memories.

It's easy to see why this book has won so many awards. Lowry has created a perfect dystopic (oxymoron intended) where everybody's like if planned out for them. There is no emotional pain. There is also no love, no compassion, no animals, no music and no color. But 12-year-old Jonas has never known anything different and has no reason to question his life in the "community." Then he's chosen to become the next Receiver of Memories. Think Dumbledore's pensive, except that all memories of the past,

This book felt nothing like The Willoughbys, the first Lois Lowry book I ever read. The world within the story felt very cold and unfeeling -- with any life beaten out of children from birth. The path of self-discovery and breaking past the mold was well-written and engaging.
I would absolutely recommend this to others and mature adolescents. Although the language itself isn't difficult to read, the concepts are a lot more cerebral and esoteric than the writing.

This is a dystopia base on Plato's Repubic. This book is well written not only for young adults, but also for adults as well.
Imagine a world where you have no decisions to make, from the day you're born untill your last breath. Someone else decides for you. All emotions must be examined and discussed so they can be smoothed out of existenced.
In this world, everyone has enough and being the same is the rule if the day. At the age you occupatision is chosen for you. Jonas, the protagonist if this ...more

I enjoyed this book. Whilst it's a short & easy read, it also made me think about our life, how we deal with situations and the life they lead in The Community. I'd have liked to read more of what happened during that year, or so, to Jonas, but also to Asher and Fiona. I'm interested in what the sequels will be like, especially having heard every possible review from terrible to amazing.

Read again in 2013 because I felt I was missing some things while listening to the new book, "Son".
This book was awesome, just as everyone has told me. What an interesting concept to live in such a structured world-totally makes you think about perceptions of emotions and their worth. I loved this book. ...more
