2.5 would be closer perhaps? I like Lyra's inventiveness (or the very superb ability to lie wonderfully). Hence, when her character is described as unimaginative, I wonder if the word imagination is not being given a very limited definition here. She probably does not have a very graphic imagination or the ability to almost immediately assume the worst, but she certainly is creative. This is the umpteenth re-read of a beloved book. It's the only YA series all of whose books I really love. Its combination of a complex heroine, daemons, armored bears, zeppelins and balloons, gyptians, multiple universes, theology, witches, the villains with their complicated desires - it's all heady, and for a piece of children's literature (that I've read), completely other.
