I loved this book and I struggle with whether to rate it 4 or 5 stars. I listened to the book on audio and although the narrator for the most part was very good. I find her child voices for 4 year old Lulu extremely irritating , as well s the voice of 12 yr. old, Betsy. She did a great voice for the grandmother with a very authentic Greek accent. This was my first book by Kristin Hannah, but I look forward to reading many more.
I must say I don't know anything about military and I can honestly say I'm more of an anti-war person, a pacifist in my beliefs, and picking up this book knowing the subject matter, I didn't know what I was getting myself into.
But this is not a book about a war itself. This is a book about what war does to families left behind waiting their loved ones to return. Book about marriage tested to the limit by the wife's deployment.

One of my favorite authors for a reason. But get the kleenex ready. I thought A Little Life was the hardest book I would ever read. This hits hard, I cried multiple times and probably the whole final 50 pages or so. I AM not a crier, but this one got me. In true Hannah fashion, she has a way of bringing really hard topics, situations and relationships to you softly and with real humanity. How you feel about war, politics, military, etc. matters not. I knew this was going to be a rough one, and sure enough, I spent the last half of this book in tears. What a lovely story about the hardships both a soldier and their families face. Thank you to all the soldiers out there who had sacrificed to keep our country free.
