Bitte gebt mir doch stattdessen lieber i

Fiona Finnegan is the eldest daughter of working class family in 1888 London. She works in the Burton Tea Factory filling tins with tea, dreaming of the day she and her boyfriend, Joe Bristow, can open their own shop. Her father becomes mixed up in unionizing Burton's and her mother accidentally runs into a notorious killer. This is just the first of many tragedies that will affect Fiona's life and future. She is forced to flee London, taking only her five year old brother Seamus. She decides to ...more

4.5 stars...why can't you do 1/2 stars?! Excellent epic saga. Donnelly is a true master storyteller. Hold onto your hats, your heart, your nerves; this book has everything ~ romance, murder, hardships, family love, blackmail, unbelievable twists, revenge, forgiveness and the spirit to keep living when dying would be easier. ...more

So much more than a story about Fiona but because that's what I expected I found the parts of the story dealing with others distracting. It took a third of the book to get to the first major hurdle in Fiona's life. We kept jumping to the other major characters that are not mentioned in the synopsis. I just kept wondering when the need for Fiona to go to America would happen.

The end was good but mostly so I wouldn't have to hear them mope about each other and keep barely missing each other and u
