After being one of those naughty people that saw the movie first, I resisted reading the book for a long while since I already knew the basic story. I am so glad I finally made the effort. I couldn’t help but be pulled straight into the world of Panem and Katnis’ story. Even knowing the storyline, I literally couldn’t put it down from beginning to end. Completely and utterly fantastic.

There are not enough positive adjectives to describe this amazing book/trilogy. I read the entire thing in one night and the moment i closed the last page i grabbed my computer and ordered the second and third book.

When i closed the final book i honestly felt like i had lost a friend and i still feel a little heartache thinking about it right now, and if that isn't a sign of an amazing book i don't know what is.

I LOVED this book. I didn't want to put it down. It was a really fast and easy read - one that I think everyone in my family would enjoy. I was somewhat frustrated by the ending, but considering I can jump right into the second book I should be fine. If I had read this prior to the second book being released I think I would've been pretty upset. It definitely leaves you wanting more. ...more

Actually 4.75, I didn't expect to love this book and I'm surprised I actually did find so much to love about it.

A brief synopsis is a little difficult because there are so many layers to it. In the not to distant future, the US has been renamed Penam and broken into districts. The will of the government is absolute and rebellion can result in decimation as experienced in region 13. Everyone seems to suffer from hopelessness, destitution and near starvation except those that live in Capital. Ann Actually 4.75, I didn't expect to love this book and I'm surprised I actually did find so much to love about it.

The will of the government is absolute and rebellion can result in decimation as experienced in region 13. Everyone seems to suffer from hopelessness, destitution and near starvation except those that live in Capital. Annually, each district is forced to participate in the Hunger Games by submitting 2 contestants from each district and watching them on the televised transmissions. The Hunger Games itself is a brutal fight to the death for 2 "lucky" teen-age tributes from each district. Katniss' heroism is shown early on as she takes her sister Prim's place as a contestant; her strength is shown as she takes responsibility of providing for her familty and her adaptability is shown as she partners with a friend to make things easier for both their families in the struggles to survive. Even a throw-away memory that Katniss has is vividly imprinted and becomes more poignant as you completely understand her belief in that being the turning point of her life.

Of the things I loved number one has to be the skill of the writing itself. The brutuality the contestants needed to show each other just to survive and yet show compassion and tenderness in some of those same scenes could not have been easy. It could be similar to another story - as some reviews have stated, but even if the bones are the same the art of writing skillfully and reaching a mass audience is a talent Ms. Collins has shown. The characters personalities were well developed, even as you read on and cheered district 12 on throughout the book, it was surprisingly easy to remember those people you met in chapter one. The budding romance was believable between Katniss & Peeta even as you saw a potential triangle by adding Gale. The bloody battles and the deaths that mattered to Katniss & Peeta champions mattered to me as a reader. Peeta did not get a chance to shine as brightly as Katniss, but he proved to be a shrewd adversary himself and exceptionally adept at various forms of camouflage. I'm quite anxious to move onto book 2, and am very glad I knew I was getting into a trilogy when I started or I'd have to run out now to continue.

Even though this is a young adult book it is written to hold the attention of those that are young adult at heart as well. Even with such a dour subject it is quick and enjoyable read. ...more

Sometimes you enjoy a book because it is well written. Sometimes you enjoy a book because the author weaves an engaging story. Despite some of the prose, run-on sentences and grammatical errors, this is an engaging story. The premise is frightening and rather horrific. Two tributes from 12 districts are chosen to battle each other to the death as penance from some war that ended over 70 years before. Compelling and enjoyable, but not the most groundbreaking piece of literature. Deserves it's popularity and I'll certainly be finishing the trilogy.
