3.5 stars. Rounded up because I really did love this book.

I loved Catching Fire. I admit, I loved The Hunger Games more, but considering how much this book had to live up to, I didn’t think it could beat out the first novel. The day after I finished the first novel, I made my boyfriend take me immediately to the library when I got off work to get this book and the next book. I loved Catching Fire. I admit, I loved The Hunger Games more, but considering how much this book had to live up to, I didn’t think it could beat out the first novel. The day after I finished the first novel, I made my boyfriend take me immediately to the library when I got off work to get this book and the next book. It was so hard to put down and I’ll admit, I even had dreams about this book and what was going to happen. I was a little obsessed.

I loved the characters in this book. It was very interesting to see how Gale and Katniss attempted to work out their relationship after the fallout from the first book. It was so nice to finally get to know Prim a bit more, especially since she is the character Katniss loved the most. I also loved meeting the new people at the Quarter Quell, all of the characters were very interesting and I genuinely wanted to know more about most of them. I will say, I didn’t like the evolution of Katniss in this book. I wanted her to fight for herself, not for someone else. But I understand her desperation, even if I didn’t like it.

What truly made this book for me was the plot. The constant threat of an uprising, the uncertainty about what could be happening to Katniss’ family, and the complete betrayal and blindsiding the capital did to the victors made this book great. The quarter quell was brutal, but added an air of mystery to the book. Why was everyone trying so hard to keep certain characters alive? Not only did it make the games more interesting, it added an even deeper psychological suspense element by making me even more suspicious of every character than I was in the first book. I did not see the end coming; it was definitely a twist for me. Even though this books ends on a cliffhanger, I thought it was very well done and made me pick up the next book immediately. I don’t want to give away anything more, but I think the plot of this one was a tad bit complex than the first book.

As a whole, I really liked this book. There were a few things about it that bothered me, but the good definitely outweighed the bad. There was one scene, the man whistling in district 11, that I don’t think I can ever forget. That was the moment I knew I was in love with this book.
