Absolutely incredible! What a great follow up to The Hunger Games. It's easy to connect with the characters (even the minor ones), & feel the absolute horror & shocking reality of this world. I gasped a few times while reading this & felt sick over what was happening. Suzanne Collins did an amazing job bringing out all those emotions of disgust, fear, & hope. This book leaves you with a very abrupt cliff hanger, so be warned! I can't wait for Mockingjay. This is my new favorite series. ...more

This book begins a few months after the end of the Hunger Games. Katniss is trying to figure out what to do with herself now that she is a victor when she gets a menacing visit from President Snow before the start of her victory tour. it took a little while for things to get going in the book. I like that there was more of a political element to the story this time around. Quite a cliffhanger. I'm glad I already have the next book in the series ready to go. ...more

2013-read this again for a book club and it was just as good the second time around

I don't want to do any spoilers, but there were some plot twists that surprised me and I like twists. The story was very good and addressed the ramifications of the double-win by District 12. The political and social effects on Panem are interesting to read, along with the character development. It definitely ended with me wanting to read the last book.

There is so much action and confusion and love and rebellion! I loved the characters from beginning to end, and the message of putting others before yourself was strong throughout. We strive to survive, but don't lose sight of our humanity in the process...
An indispensable quality of writing with a voice true to the character teamed with an overwhelming plot full of blood-curdling twists and heart-wrenching turns.
