Wow! This is an unbelievably fantastic book! It's been so long since I've read something that I immediately wanted to reread when finished, but that's how this book left me. Amazing!

I thought I was reading a book about a cross between fabulism and actual historical fiction, but for some reason, Deathless wasn't what I expected. I didn't know the story of Marya Morevna and Koschei the Deathless. I kept putting this book down, not okay with where it was going, until I gave up and looked up the fable. And I sneaked in a look at the acknowledgement. Apparently Deathless was an answer to why was Koschei in Marya Morevna's basement, but it didn't make much sense if it was.

I bought this because Catherynne Valente came to Finland this year and I wanted to get her signature. I chose Deathless because the story seemed interesting. That was about five months ago and now I have finally read Deathless and I loved it! The writing is so beautiful and the story goes from creepy to sweet so fast that it almost makes me dizzy. This is definitely staying in my permanent shelf and I need to find more books from Valente.
