Kate Shugak used to be an investigator for the DA in Anchorage – until she was seriously injured. Now she lives a reclusive life on the edge of a national park, her familial land where she was raised. When a young park ranger goes missing people assume the winter weather got to the inexperienced “Outsider.” But when the seasoned investigator sent to track him down also disappears it’s clear that something more than weather is involved. The ranger’s father is a U.S. Congressman and he brings in t ...more

I really liked this well-plotted mystery. The heroine, Kate Shugak, is complicated, flawed, and sometimes unpleasant, but well worth a novel and very fascinating. The Alaskan setting was very interesting and there was lots of atmosphere and information about the native population, their political and social problems, and their relationships with each other and the Outside. But it was well over my tolerance level of extreme language.

I'd heard such good things about this series, but have to say I was disappointed with the first installment. I usually can keep up with intricate plots and lots of characters, but I was overwhelmed with all the characters introduced in this novel. I had to flip back several times to recall who someone was and how they fit in the story. And speaking of the story, there wasn't much to it. Kate Shugak goes and talks to a few poeple and figures it all out 'just like that.'

I really did like some of

Great mystery story set in the unique setting of an Alaska National Park, accessible only by plane. A park ranger has been missing for 6 weeks. I wonder if they would've sent in an investigator (view spoiler)

I enjoyed listening to this book, so I didn't stumble over the unusual words and names.

This book started out slowly - there was far too much 'information dump' and not enough story at least for the first couple of chapters. Although finding out about Alaska was interesting, it could have been done in a much more entertaining way. However, the story picked up as Kate starts investigating what is looking more and more like a double murder and by the end of the book, I was really enjoying it. It seems to be an interesting, and very different crime series. ...more

I just love this series! Kate Shugak is a tell-it-like-it-is heroine. No beating around the bush for this gal. I find this very refreshing and enjoyable. It surprises me that all the men are after her since she isn't described as a raving beauty. She's only 5 feet tall and the guy she's hooked on (Jack Morgan) is a big bear of a man at almost 7 feet. I just can't picture them together.

I've always been fascinated by Alaska and a story with a native Alaskan heroine is a bonus. The mysteries always

I have mixed feelings on this book. I felt like it spent entirely too much of its short 208 pages talking about Alaska and Alaskans and not enough on the case that Kate was actually investigating. And then when the ending was finally revealed, it felt like the easiest road to take as far as the who-dun-it. This one just wasn't for me and I'm not sure I will even give the second book a try after this... ...more

This is the first book of a series set in Alaska about Kate Shugak who left the Anchorage District Attorney's office to return to her roots. It is a decent book ... 3 stars for me. My husband has read almost all of the series and loves them. The mystery was good, but I'm not sure yet whether or not I like Kate. I'll keep reading them ... at least for awhile. ...more
