Not sure what exactly I was expecting from this book, but this wasn't it. There was parts that I enjoyed and found intrigue, but it was weighted down with other stuff that I didn't find a connection to. I think the mystery and intrigue could have been developed more which would have held my interest better.
I felt that the characters lacked solid development to aid the story. We learn some about Clay and his love interest, but the depth wasn't there. I understand why some of the characters main ...more

After Clay Jannon loses his job as a website designer, he passes a bookstore looking for an overnight clerk. It’s a very peculiar and dusty place where there are few customers, with the exception of a handful of rather eccentric people who borrow rather than buy the books. Behind the desk, the back and lining the walls are rows of old leather books that reach far up into the extremely tall space. Yet these books aren’t for sale. They are for members to check out and return. The books look like t

I honestly didn't know what to expect from Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan but I loved it!!! I knew that it was a book about books/bookstore but I didn't know that I would be pulled into a world of secret societies (historical and new), Google and all its perks, typefaces (there is more than New Times Roman, and cryptography (read the book). Clay Jannon is unemployed and desperate. He stumbles upn Mr. Penumbra's 24 hour Bookstore and on a whim goes in and applies. This is a different kind of bookstore. Instead of being large it is tall.

In the back there are shelf upon shelf of books. These are not for sale they are borrowed by a certain clientele, not everyone can borrow them. Of course Clay is not allowed to touch the book ...more

Clay Jannon has been downsized and having little luck getting employment. He finally gets a night clerk job at a bookstore because he can brave the tall ladder to reach the books. But the bookstore is not your normal bookstore. There are few customers and they request specific books that are not in any book catalog that he can find. He is cautioned to record in detail the transactions and not to look in the books. Of course, he does and soon he is trying to puzzle out who these unusual customers

I liked this book for being a bit of fun, and a love letter to books and their continued importance even in the face of technological advancement. It didn't grab me and I found the solution to the mystery a little anti-climactic, but not a bad book by any means.
