Another book I've read before but didn't remember a bit of it when I re-read it. I did remember I didn't like it, but I wanted to give it another chance anyway. But, this book still doesn't work for me. Itchampions the wrong person - Amir isn't someone I wanted redeemed. He was a spoiled brat without common sense or compassion, right up until the end. I cared nothing if Sohrab accepted him. In fact, I was hoping he wouldn't.

This is a book that tries to fool you into thinking that the "hero" is a victim of his circumstances and uses a culture and a country to do so because of an westernized concept of "they have it so bad over there" mentality. There is nothing to like about Amir. He has no feelings for anyone other than himself. He is a coward and self-centered and is willing to see everybody around him get hurt and even die in order to protect himself and his comfort.

I get this is a universally-loved novel, but I couldn't finish it as I found the rape scene horribly graphic and, as a rape survivor myself, incredibly triggering. I apologise if this is a spoiler for anyone (though it does happen relatively early on in the book), but it should come with a trigger warning. I would recommend survivors of any kind of sexual abuse steer clear.
