I recently read The Rope which was #17 in the Anna Pigeon series. It was supposedly Anna's first case and I hated it. I decided to go back and read her first published book to see how the two compare. Track of the Cat introduces Anna Pigeon, a ranger in the U.S. Park Service. Having just returned from one of our wonderful national parks, Yellowstone, I was definitely discouraged by how miserable all of the characters in Track of the Cat seem to be. Many of the people we spoke with at Yellowstone were seasonal workers who come back year after year and love the park. No one seemed to much care for Guadalupe National Park. I guess July in Western Texas is probably not the optimal place to be, but it made for a depressing story.
