I recently read The Rope which was #17 in the Anna Pigeon series. It was supposedly Anna's first case and I hated it. I decided to go back and read her first published book to see how the two compare. Track of the Cat introduces Anna Pigeon, a ranger in the U.S. Park Service. She's currently stationed in the mountains of the Guadalupe National Park in Texas. Track of the Cat by Nevada Barr is the first book in the Anna Pigeon mystery series. Park ranger in the Guadalupe Mountains, Anna comes across the body of one of her fellow rangers whose death is put down to a mountain lion attack. Anna suspects otherwise, especially when further accidents occur. It took me a while to get interested in the book at first but I ended up enjoying it immensely. It was more fun than I thought it would be. I liked all the ranger stuff, national parks are a wishlist of mine. I liked Anna Pigeon, and while I figured out the culprit, I didn't think that it would have been glaringly obvious to her, within the book. She also didn't do anything really stupid. I'll look forward to reading the rest of the series. ...more

Having just returned from one of our wonderful national parks, Yellowstone, I was definitely discouraged by how miserable all of the characters in Track of the Cat seem to be. Many of the people we spoke with at Yellowstone were seasonal workers who come back year after year and love the park. No one seemed to much care for Guadalupe National Park. I guess July in Western Texas is probably not the optimal place to be, but it made for a depressing story.
