This murder mystery takes place in Guadalupe Mountain National Park, amid the cacti, the desert, and the rough country of West Texas. I really like the main character Ranger Anna Pigeon as well as her ultra-urban sister Molly (whom we meet only through phone calls). Their relationship is close but realistic, a bit sarcastic but caring. Anna gets suspicious of the death of another ranger, but the higher-ups just want the problem to go away.
