What to say about this book? Well for starters it's hard reading a book that everyone is talking about and debating so intensely. I kept my mind open going into this book though. It isn't brilliantly written by any means, however it was an interesting read. There were several spelling and grammatical errors. The erotic scenes were very imaginable and sometimes intense, that's why this was written after all. It isn't brilliantly written by any means, however it was an interesting read. There were several spelling and grammatical errors. The erotic scenes were very imaginable and sometimes intense, that's why this was written after all. I think I stand on the other side of the fence than most people who saw a problem with the relationship. Some people loved the couple, some very heavily accused Christian Grey of being borderline abusive. I however felt that Mr. Grey was completely open and upfront with what he wanted from Anastasia Steele, and more importantly what he wanted to do with her. Miss Steele however was very manipulative, she wanted to be with Grey and felt the only to do it was on his terms and therefor she would agree only to pout and consider fleeing when things didn't go the way she had planned. Several times she did things or asked for certain things to happen because she thought it would make Christian do what she wanted or would result in her getting another thing she wanted out of him. However when this plan backfired or was harder to handle then she thought it would be, she'd run off and pout like a child, feeling taken advantage of. It's not fair to be mad at a man who does what you asked him to do just because you didn't like what he did. I hope her character grows up a little in the following books, she's very childish and naïve in terms of handling grown up relationships. She's intelligent, hardworking and confident in her daily life but when it comes to Mr. Grey she is very childlike. Also Christian has a long list of personal problems, I'm not saying he doesn't but he's aware of said problems and is brutally honest in his intentions and needs/wants from the beginning. I look forward to reading the following two books in hopes that each character grows, I'm very interested in seeing how this pans out. ...more

I've just reread this book as I keep seeing so many more good things said about it than bad. Admittedly, when I first read it, I pretty much hated it. Having read it a second time and having had a bit more exposure to the genre, I have to amend my opinion and say this is definitely one of the most interesting and intriguing books in its class. The unbelievable quality is not necessarily a bad thing. Once I ignored all the things that bother me (yes, they still very much bother me) the love story I've just reread this book as I keep seeing so many more good things said about it than bad. Admittedly, when I first read it, I pretty much hated it. Having read it a second time and having had a bit more exposure to the genre, I have to amend my opinion and say this is definitely one of the most interesting and intriguing books in its class. The unbelievable quality is not necessarily a bad thing. Once I ignored all the things that bother me (yes, they still very much bother me) the love story itself is one of the best I've read. And I can't say I wish it was written in a different way, because in a way the things that bother me are very much woven into the things that don't. Thus, though I don't love this book, I'd still reread it again, which says much about its appeal.

Original Review (First read in October 2012):

When I read this I was extremely frustrated with the lack of practical psychological states, the use of the dom/sub relationship (or technical lack of, really) was not particularly thrilling (seriously... sex scenes DO NOT make a complete story... and it's always the same... I would get seriously bored if I were in this relationship (not that everything is about sex, but the point remains)), and the entire romance was not all that great in general. Once I got fifty pages in I was suspending belief in almost every element in order to simply finish the book. I must say that there is some element to the story that made me want to finish it in the first place... I still have no idea what that element is, though I suspect that its the idea of being able to be the element of change in someones life (which is impractical to consider, but its a nice thought). I will stop here, for the problems with this book were quite numerous. Why 2 stars after so many problems? Because as sad as this book is, the sadness can be a good way to de-stress from the even crappier elements of my day-to-day life.

Just as a side note on something I find amusing. Most people fall into two extremes when it comes to this book: one, I cannot believe the stupidity of this books content and it requires way to much putting aside of knowledge OR two, omg, I love this book so much! im not a ripper of sexually explicit books,and aint got no hypocrisy of denying them (who aint the pleasure of that kind of imagination, though)and honestly if im going to arrange them based on whatever basis, this sucks to bottom-est, fvck i was really disappointed to a friend who firmly suggested it to me back when the book was just starting to marketed, the impact was so exaggerated that i started to feel that she was a no-brain, and she was my professor before on Animal science.
