I tried to give reading this a chance, so that I could be familiar with what everyone is talking about and be able to participate in discussions.

I got about halfway through before Christian started giving me severe flashbacks concerning an abusive ex-boyfriend. I couldn't keep reading without seriously triggering myself into massive panic attacks. It wasn't even from the BDSM aspects. It was from the normal day-to-day interactions.

I waited a long time to read this. I belonged to an erotica book club, so we were not new to this genre...and many had strong opinions, mostly taking offense that this writer would represent the genre to the mainstream masses. However, most had not read the book. I wanted to wait until I felt all of reactions & opinions & the hype was no longer affecting me...as much as that is possible.

Why I decided to read it now. I'd just read a book that I gave 5* and thought I would be in the correct frame ...more

Everything I was told about this book was true: it was slow to start, it got me hooked in the end, and...of course...it's filthy. I did find it annoying that the book ended where it did...it felt like a ploy to make more money - similar to the way the last books of the Harry Potter and Twilight series were split into two movies each. I suppose I do understand it from the point of view of length. It would've been difficult to fit all of the book details into singular movies, similar to the way it ...more

I may downgrade this rating later, but for now it gets two stars for literary merit (or lack of) and being so damn annoying, with an additional star for being unintentionally hilarious. Case in point - referring to his penis as a "Christian Grey-flavoured popsicle" SO MUCH LOL.
