Reread: Nov 16, 2024
I got stalled in my Dark Tower reading and forgot what this was all about. Hopefully this reread helps me progress and finally finish Dark Tower. As it is, I found that the book slightly improved on this reading. I'm still groping in the dark for the Gunslinger's motive and I found his wanderings mostly aimless still, but on the whole the book was slightly more entertaining than the first time I read it, now that I knew what to expect.

3 stars. I’m glad that I randomly picked this up from the library. It’s a very unique read and while I didn’t love it, I still had a lot of fun reading it.
Stephen King is a awesome writer and I really love the way he does storytelling but I have to say the first half of this book was so slow for me. The very beginning was confusing but I quickly caught on as I went but once the second half hit this got really interesting. I like some bits in the book. A lot of interesting things happen (most of which are mentioned in passing), and some sections are vaguely fascinating enough to help you keep reading on. Stephen King's writing seems to flow between literary and high fantasy quite comfortably. But for all that, the book is a dull read. Perhaps this just is a literary style which is not for me, but it is rather sad to end a book caring about none of the characters and feeling quite thankful that the book is finally

Interesting
I may need to complete the series and then do it again before I will fully know how I feel.

This is the first novel in Stephen King’s epic Dark Tower series and introduces the main character of the tale, known simply as “the gunslinger”. He's a mysterious cowboy-type character who is pursuing an unknown “man in black” across a barren desert. Through his encounters with the inhabitants of the desert and with Jake, the strange boy he meets later in the journey, he tells stories of the events of his past.

I guess this was a case of too high expectations 13 I was rather underwhelmed by this book.
The story is set in a rather surreal wasteland where a man chases the Man in Black. There 19s really not all that much action. He meets a small number of people on the road. Most notably a young boy, who remembers our world, whom he professes to love but sacrifices in order not to lose his prey. In between he remembers his youth and how he came to be the last Gunslinger.

Interesting read and intriguing concept. I really enjoyed it. King did an excellent job of holding back information, while still giving enough to keep me involved and curious. Will definitely pick up the next one.
