I've read all the Dark Tower books in Finnish and now I'm finally reading the books in English... It's been years since I've read these first volumes so it's not like I remembered everything. But The Gunslinger isn't a book that's hard to forget. And I love Roland and Jake and how touching they are. A great book. ...more

1.5 stars. This is not the first time I have read this book. A few years ago I tried and then failed to finish. I haven't read too many western-influenced fantasy novels before. I liked how it was unclear about whether the world was a different Earth, or an Earth that has been through some sort of apocalypse. What I didn't like was how confused I was at many parts. Especially at the end. I know some of it

By no means a "self-contained novel", as King asserts. This book is just awful. King expects the reader to be able to read what he doesn't say, which becomes increasingly frustrating when the action is progressing without the reader. Horrible writing style, with a less-than-satisfying ending (and that's putting it a bit nicely). ...more
