This is the first in the novels that comprise King’s epic odyssey “Dark Tower” series. It’s an odd mixture of classic Western mixed with science fiction, fantasy and horror. In it, he introduces the reader to Roland Deschain, a “gunslinger. ” Haunted and determined, Roland wanders a bleak landscape in search of the man in black, determined to eradicate evil. Roland will do whatever it takes to get to his final goal of finding the Dark Tower, even sacri ...more

It has taken me a while to process this book and therefore its also taken a while to write a review. The more I thought about it, the more I liked it. I just wasn't sure when I started out. I didn't know where it was headed - I mean, who was this gunslinger? What world did he exist in? And why was he chasing the man in black? Having read quite a lot of Stephen King before, I was familiar with the man in black, but I felt lost. This is deep fantasy written in King's absolutely magnificent style,
