It's funny to me as I've tried to read The Windup Girl several times but couldn't get into rhythm. I'd picked up Ship Breaker a couple of times and found it easy to get into but put down quickly because I knew I would enjoy it but wanted to heighten it by waiting til I was in the mood specifically for dystopian fiction.

It's been weeks now that I've been on a rampage through that genre and I did VERY much enjoy this book and am thankful I waited.

It did not engage me quite as much as I’d hoped, but enough that I will read the companion novels. Especially since they’re about Tool, the most (only?) compelling character from this book. I want to know what happens with Tool. Nailer and Nita, not so much.

Incidentally, I read this book just as Hurricane Barry is crawling over the New Orleans area - drowned cities in the Gulf Coast don’t seem too far fetched. I’d like to see more of the world though, the world building here is limited to a very

This was a quick, enjoyable read. I look forward to reading more Bacigalupi novels. At some point while reading, with the talk of climate change causing category 6 "city killer" hurricanes, I had a flash of a rather bleak (and hopefully farfetched) future eerily similar to the book. ...more
