I knew already that I liked Bacigalupi's work for adults, and had been intrigued by a Verge podcast with him about this book, so it's no surprise that I really liked this. The young protagonist Nailer and his friends are captivating, and the world they live in is all too believable. Nailer is part of a crew of who salvages metals from ships that are no longer useful in a world without fossil fuels. As he strips copper from the lines he falls through a weakened panel into a pool of oil where he struggles to live. When he finds a door opening into the sea, he is saved.
