This book recounts a young girl's story of her life in 1692 in Massachusets and also portrays the bond that exists between mother and daughter no matter what. The reader learns about life on the farm she lived on, the love and tribulations of family and the hysterics surrounding the accusations of young girls who claimed to be victims of spells put upon them by neighbors and residents of surrounding towns.

This a well written story that demonstrates well how badly people can hurt (even cause the death of) each other when fear, ignorance, and jealousy are allowed to rule. The book also gives very vivid description of living conditions in 1690's Massachusetts.

This book was just OK. I expected more, I guess. Really should be 2.5 stars-- 3 stars feels too generous. The writing was very good, and the narrative seemed to describe old New England very well, but the characters were flat. Not a lot of emotional life from them or understanding as to their motivations. Good description of "mob mentality", however, as the accusations took on a life of their own. So I guess I would say that she was better writing about things than people. The book is worth read

This is a very good read. The story is sensitive, sad and soul stirring. It takes one to the days of witch trials where anyone who had a grudge against another, disliked them or felt wronged by them could accuse that person. How could people be deceived by such lies is hard to understand but superstition ran rampant, particularly in those long desolate lonely winters. Even though I passed up this read many times it because I did not want to read about witch trials, I recommend that this as a cho

This one has lingered on my shelf forever. When I finally decided to pick it up, I decided to try the audio copy from my library. I'm glad I made that decision. I don't think I would have gotten through this one in print. But the audio really drew me in from the beginning. I was absolutely hooked on this book. It's difficult to read in the second half, with the descriptions of the characters being imprisoned. It was raw and emotional. It was hard to stomach at times. And it made me realize that

I gave this book 4 stars because it was really good, but it is a tough book to read. The subject is the Salem witch trials and no sense is spared as you relive what it must have been like to live through that period of hate when neighbors turned against each other. The author is a descendant of Martha Carrier who researched historical documents for this novel about Sarah, Martha's daughter. It shows the way whispering and gossip can escalate into real hatred as a family tries to cope with its sl

I started this book and finished it very quickly. It is not necessarily a quick read but it is very good. Kent has well researched this book and created fictional characters around historical ones. She has so well developed the characters that a reader can easily identify with them, so much so that I cried when the mother died - a fact that the book's jacket acknowledges - so I knew it was coming before I started it. I highly recommend this book.
