There is a line early in this book that reads, “Perhaps there is some secret sort of homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers. How delightful if it were true.” It must be true, because I avoided this book for some time while everyone else was raving about it. It sounded much too sappy. A story told complete in letters? How could that possibly work? But Shaffer and Barrows pull it off brilliantly. Not since "The Help" have I read a book that I simply did not want to see

I really enjoyed this. I don't usually like novels written in letter format but it seemed to work very well for this story. I finally picked this up after watching Tony Robinson's Walking Through History about the Channel Isles during the five year Nazi Occupation. Thanks to Tony I could see those concrete bunkers & tunnels.

Didn't think I would enjoy the letter-writing format but I did. Loved the characters, loved the story.

I listened to this book. I don't think I would have liked it half as well if I had read the physical book. The story itself had a lot of fluff and was utterly predictable. However, the audiobook was read by some incredibly artists who drew out every bit of emotion and made the book come alive. I believe that this book was made to be read aloud and would make an absolutely lovely play if someone were to adapt it into a script
