Book number two in the mystery series featuring Aleut private investigator Kate Shugack. This one starts with a bang, as a deranged serial killer goes on a rampage killing people at random. Kate (along with her trusty wolf-Husky mix, Mutt) stops the guy. Case solved. Or is it?

Stabenow writes a great thriller/mystery. I love the setting in a very rural part of Alaska, and the way she incorporates some Aleut culture into the mix. Kate is a very strong woman

I must be a hard woman to please, because I didn’t like this book anywhere near as much as most reviewers. I like the setting, a fictional national park in Alaska where Kate Shugak keeps a homestead after leaving her job in the Anchorage DA’s office. I love her half-wolf, half-huskie companion Mutt. And I like a lot of the other people who seem to be “regulars” in the series. I generally like Kate. But I didn’t like a number of things she did in this story. One morning a deranged man goes on a k ...more

I don't think I'd class this series as a complex crime series - the 'whodunnit' was reasonably obvious. But the location is fabulous and very different which is what sets this series apart. I think I enjoyed reading it for that alone. ...more

The first day of spring in Alaska shows signs of thawing at Kate Shugak's cabin. But for Roger McAniff it is the beginning of his killing spree which brings him to Kate's backyard. But stopping a killer is not the end of the story. One victim was killed by a different rifle and Kate is asked to track down this killer. Kate is a no-nonsense methodical and intuitive half Aleut private investigator who knows all the people who live in the Alaskan National Park. I enjoy learning about the culture of ...more

Once again, I absolutely loved this book but probably because I love Alaska. I find all the little every day things interesting and I like the interpersonal relationships between such close neighbors in the wilderness of the great state of Alaska. Interestingly enough this is the exact same stuff I hate in other books. The mystery in interesting and the way Kate breaks it down is fascinating.

I wasn't really keen on the first book of the series, but this one was better. I'm not sure if that is because my expectations were low, or because (view spoiler) I'm not still sure about the human characters of this series, but I do like Mutt. ...more
