The father had been an abusive father and husband and when the wife finally gets it together to take the children away, the damage is done. The father has little to anything to do with the children and the son, Paul Tracy, wants little to do with his father and celebrates that all his children are girls and won't feel the need to play a sport, like their father.

I loved this book! It held me spellbound, especially the play-by-play of the baseball scenes. The story is told in a series of flashbacks. Paul Tracy learns that his father, former (fictional) Mets pitcher Warren Tracy is dying. But all the things you think might be cool about having a major league pitcher for a father were the exact opposite in Paul's home.
