Interesting dystopian world that reminds me of the Blade Runner (or the actual Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?) and 1984. It's kind of an introspective book without a lot of action or even drama.
Finished the trilogy, but I didn't love this first book and I think it is by far the best. So if you weren't thrilled with this book, I'd read some spoilers about the other two and not bother reading them. If I knew then, what I know now, I would've abandoned the series after the first book.

Imagine a society where there are only 100 songs to listen to, 100 history lessons to learn, 100 poems to read and where couples are matched based on compatibility of the match and not love. This is the world where Cassia lives and she's about to find out who her match is. Everything seems to be perfect especially when she's matched with Xander - the boy from down the street, her best friend. Then she sees another's face and she begins to wonder if her world is as perfect as she's always thought

A future where everything is determined for you. What job you will do, what you eat, how you spend your leisure time, who you will marry, when you will die.
I can't remember the last time that a book depressed me so much.
It was all so vague - "The Society" that runs it all, everyone with their coloured pills, 100 poems, or songs that were chosen - because you can't keep everything (why - what the hell happened - how did they get to that point), it got to a point where I just didn't care what happ ...more

I was really surprised by how much I liked this book. I heard a lot of people say it didn't live up to the hype, so my expectations were pretty low. Yes, this type of story has been told before - it specifically brings to mind The Giver - but at the same time, it felt unique. The characters were very strong & likeable. Their growth, especially Cassia's, was believable & fascinating to watch. I loved her connection to Ky & how being with him made her see their perfect life in a completely di ...more

I'm giving this 3.5 stars because I loved the poetry images, how important the words are to the characters, and that it's a nice, clean read. I had to keep fighting the sinking feeling that I'd read parts of this book before and trying to find the originality in the story. It borrows from "The Giver", "1984", and the "The Hunger Games", plus uses the formulaic pattern of a strong female character with a good-boy love interest who falls for a dark, bad-boy a la "Twilight" and "Hourglass Door".
