Scarlett O'Hara is young, beautiful, and completely selfish. She is in love with Ashley Wilkes, Ashley is promised to marry Melanie Hamilton. Then comes Rhett Butler, he is in love with Scarlett although you may not guess it at first from the way he acts.

So Scarlett confesses her love to Ashley at a party, and Ashley announces his engagement to Melanie. So obviously Scarlett runs off and marries Melanie's brother Charles to make Ashley jealous...

So 16 year old Scarlett O'Hara becomes Scarlett Hamilton, and within months becomes a widow and a mother. Turns out she is a terrible mother and an even worse widow. She gets out of widowhood as quick as possible thanks to Rhett.

As she gets more comfortable in Atlanta the war heats up and it becomes apparent she must flee. Just one problem, Melanie is hugely pregnant and can't leave so she stays and delivers the baby. On the night the Beau is born she decides she can finally flee. Once again Rhett comes to the rescue and sweeps her halfway to Tara, where he drops the bombshell that he has enlisted and she must make the remainder of her way alone.

Once Scarlett gets to Tara she realizes things have gone terribly wrong. Her mother Ellen is dead, her sisters are both ill, and her father has lost his mind. It all lays on her shoulders to keep Tara running, and keep everyone fed.

As the war ends and scallywags and Republicans take over she is at risk of losing Tara. Once again she does the craziest thing. First she offers to be Rhett's mistress but he is in prison and of no help at the moment, so she runs out and marries her sister Suellen's fiancee.

She realizes quickly that he doesn't have much money and is terrible business man. She ends up borrowing money from Rhett and buying a lumber mill. She then once again does the unthinkable and runs it by herself. Doesn't even give it to her husband...GASP. She even continues to work through her pregnancy. (Which Rhett meets her and rides with her to everyday.) Then she welcomes baby Ella and she continues to work...it's unthinkable.

She is attacked on her way between mills one day and it turns out that her husband Frank is a member of the KKK. He attacks the group but is killed and many men that would be in prisoned or hanged are rescued by Rhett.

Before Frank is even buried Rhett had proposed and Scarlett has accepted. She finally will have everything she wants a man that lets her do whatever her heart desires and money. Lot's of money she can get whatever she wants with.

Rhett never really gets what he wants from her however. She ends up having another baby, they call Bonnie. Scarlett then tells Rhett that he is never allowed into her bedroom again as she is saving heart for Ashley.

I thought this was supposed to be an epic romance but turns out it is one girls selfish drive through life and those she destroys along the way. ...more

My heart was wrenched out when I was reading the last 100 pages of the book. I can't bear to give this book 5 stars because my 5-star books make me rejoice, "damn I will read this book over and over again". Well, not this book because of the emotional rollercoaster. I was shredded into pieces.

Still an excellent story.
I would also still pick Rhett over Ashley any day, Think that Melanie is a saint, because she just couldn't be that oblivious and want to often just smack Scarlett.
However, it is well worth reading if you never have and also the movie is amazing. ...more
