Though not my absolute favorite, this definitely ranks among the top Austen novels for me. The personalities of her characters are so entertaining and marvelous. There are a LOT of social underpinnings so carefully woven into the narrative and a few convoluted, though not overly complex, plot points that make the narrative intriguing and take it far beyond a mere social novel. It's truly masterful writing.

This was my first Austen novel (which shocked me when I realized my neglect of her works though I'm a professed bookworm) and I was definitely not disappointed. Elizabeth was a great heroine, Mr Darcy has stolen my heart, and the satirical components to the novel made it a pleasurable experience. I will definitely be diving back in for more Austen-mania!

So I feel like I'm going to get things thrown at me when I write this review but it's fine.

First half: 2 stars. Second half: 4 stars.
Listened to this on audio, the audio edition with Rosamund Pike narrating. She did a great job and I think she also narrated a few other Jane Austen books as well, so I'll definitely listen those.
I really wanted to love this. This is a time period I'm interested in, written by someone who was a lot closer to that time period than I am, and it's a romance ...more
