4 Elizabeth Bennet stars!

I know many would think of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy when they thought about this book, but I’d make a difference here. I loved both the characters, but Elizabeth overpowered Mr. Darcy for me. She is indisputably one of my favorite female characters till date.

I’d try to keep my review short as much has been said in finer words about this book. Its almost a disgrace that I’m reading such a beautiful piece of literature this late in my life after over 2 decades. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen- one doesn’t need to be reminded of how popular a classic it has been in its time. And even now, does it continue to create the same air of magnificence as it once did in its youth. There’s a reason why it is termed as an evergreen classic.

The title of the book is as exact as it possibly could be. Mr. Darcy and his pride, his condescension, his haughty nature with people he considered his inferiors, and how his pride overshadowed every character that he encountered, every acquaintance he formed. Prejudice finds the better of Elizabeth who otherwise impartial in her account of people, lets her outlook be wavered by people who deceived her under the disguise of goodness and benevolence.

The next thing that is obvious from the very first is how much I loved Elizabeth Bennet’s character. She was a fearless, dignified woman with a lively yet sturdy mind, impartial and unbiased; an affectionate sibling to all her sisters and a sincere daughter to her father. She was least bothered about the many qualms of the society towards her reserved attitude. Though she always guarded herself in her manners, she couldn’t be curtailed in asserting her freedom to determining her decisions and her future, without any interference. I loved the way she conveyed her honest views to society and its people without caring of the latter’s judgement of her. Her sensibility and practicality made me respect her to levels I never presumed she would.

“I am only resolved to act in that manner, which will, in my own opinion, constitute my happiness, without reference to you, or to any person so wholly unconnected with me.”

About the rest of the characters, I liked Mr. Darcy, especially the fact that Elizabeth’s honest and truthful words about himself didn’t bring in any difference in what light he had begun to see her in the first place. I loved the fact that he endeavoured to redeem himself of the offences which she spoke of, because he wanted to be better for her. I quite liked Mr. Bennet, for he was witty and sarcastic throughout and though his casual behaviour towards his daughters is not something I quite approve of, even then I liked the fact that he was as esteemed in nature as in intelligence.

The writing style is beautiful, as you can always expect from a classic of this big a fame. The basic storyline however wasn’t much engaging, and I was kind of disinterested by middle half. The plot is, by every angle predictable, so that also added to the blatancy of the story. However, I thoroughly enjoyed savouring the language and the strong female protagonist it structured never made it plain enough to impede me from reading it.

4 stars for me.

I love this book! Mr. Bennet is one of my favourite characters, I love his wit, wisdom and charm. Even though he is severe on his two youngest children, he is right; they are incredibly silly for their age and immature, and shouldn't be out in public for they can easily fall prey to a scandal.

I love Elisabeth's headstrong demeanor as well as her love for her family. When she finds out her sister has come down with a cold she rushes to her sisters side by crossing a 50 miles of land to reach her ...more

One of the most famous romances, and a book which genuinely deserves it's acclaim. I must have read this 10 times - at least! Elizabeth and Mr Darcy are a brilliant couple, and I like that neither are overly sentimental. The courtship is beautiful and fits the regency period splendidly - i've read modern adaptations before, but they just don't seem to work for me. I am a history buff, and I do love the regency era, so perhaps this is why but regardless of the cause I find the manners and social ...more

Mills and Boon at its best.

Before reading pride and prejudice, I had not read any Mills and Boon. Now, I have read them all. No need to pursue this genre any further.
