A book that I thought that I should start reading some clasical litrature. A sharp and witty comedy of manners played out in early 19th Century English society, a world in which men held virtually all the power and women were required to negotiate mine-fields of social status, respectability, wealth, love, and sex in order to marry both to their own liking and to the advantage of their family. I recommend anyone who wants to get into this book watch an adaptation first, particularly the famous BBC miniseries with Colin Firth. Then read this, and be patient, and keep that adaptation in mind.

Because Austen's a great satirist, she pretty much originated the romantic comedy, and her female characters aren't just remarkable for their time, they're remarkable period. But she writes like she's telling you about a party she just attended, where everything was hilarious and witty and sparkling

It was difficult for me to rate this book. Because it is such a well loved classic, I felt that perhaps it should automatically be awarded 5 stars. I have always loved this story & am glad that I can finally claim having read it instead of just seeing it played out on film. If I had not watched the movie so many times, I possibly would have called this book outstanding, but I noticed while reading that it was almost like the story was just humming in the background, much as a movie you've seen s ...more
