Considering that the Taliban has just retaken the government, this was a particularly timely read. Will they return to the situation in which women must stay home, can only travel out with a man (mahram), and make women wear a chadri again?

This is the incredible true story of Kamila Sidiqi, who becomes an entrepreneur while under Taliban control. She figures out a way to make money to support her family by becoming a dressmaker and negotiating with local merchants right under the nose of Taliban

Good read for a different perspective

We have all heard about Al Queda and the Taliban and Afghanistan for so many years. To be honest, I never really understood the groups. It was great to just follow one family and then have the climate and traditions of Afghan people and how the Taliban and then Al Queda and then America effected their country. I feel like I have a much better understanding while enjoying a great read. Not usually a fan of non-fiction but was very happy that I read this.

Afghanistan had been under Soviet control and now the Taliban took charge. The women were being persecuted. Women hat to wear the chandri. When shopping it required that a male family member accompany each woman and more restrictions were put in place.

This book such shows how a simple girl can mobilize her family and other women to earn money and provide services and goods for other women. Her example of how good deeds and spirit create a positive ripple effect.

Although this interesting and is from a woman's perspective based on Khamila Siddiqi's experience of living in Afghanistan during the Taliban rule, I don't know if it will remain as being very memorable. I commend her bravery at this extremely difficult time for Afghani women and most of the Afghani people. ...more
