On September 11, 2001, American airspace was closed in the wake of the terrorist attacks. Thirty eight planes landed in Gander, Newfoundland. The inspiring story of a small town (pop. 10,000) which was the site of a little used international airport, who hosted over 6,000 passengers and crew when the terrorist attacks on 9/11 caused the United States to shut down their airspace for several days. On September 11, 2001 when the World Trade Towers were attacked, the Air Control center in Gander, Newfoundland, Canada was informed that air space into the US was closed and all incoming flights had to land in Canada or return to their place of origin. Hundreds of pilots had one minute to decide and then were directed where to land or diverted back home. Thirty-eight of those planes landed in Gander; over 6,000 passengers.
