When terrorists crashed US commercial jets into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, the administration moved quickly to shut down all US air space. Plane had to land – immediately – at the nearest airport. But planes coming from Europe had basically just one option … Gander, Newfoundland. In a matter of hours, the town of 10,000 was host to another 6,596 passengers and crew members.

In short vignettes, Jim Defede tells the various stories of the people whose flights were diverted on September 11, 2001 to Gander, Newfoundland (and other cities and towns close by). This is an excellent account of the hospitality shown by residents of Gander, Newfoundland to passengers of planes that were diverted on September 11, 2001 from their U.S. destinations.

This read like a magazine article to me and then at the end I saw the author is a mag writer and this was his first book. So there you go. Although I found the short sectioned format a little jarring and it made it hard to keep track of the people, the stories were fascinating and some left me very moved. The stories of the people were great and life-affirming.

4.5 stars. I saw the musical Come From Away and learned about Gander, Newfoundland and their hospitality on 9/11. Since then, I've been meaning to read one of the books written about the event. This got picked for my Nothing But Reading Challenges TBR Tackler and I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
