I was searching for a book set in Virginia for a challenge and came across Big Stone Gap by Adriana Trigiani, set in the late 1970’s. The main character, Ave Maria Mulligan is a 35 year old self-proclaimed spinster and the local pharmacist in Big Stone Gap, a small town in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

I wanted to give up at around page 60, but didn't because I was hoping something spectacular would happen. Like The Rolling Stone's sang, We don't always get what we want. I just wanted something significant and exciting to happen. The entire book was predictable and boring as were the characters. The MC is someone you just wanted to kick in the teeth. Ava Maria is a 35 year old "spinster" pharmacist who has just lost her mother when the story opens. She discovers things she never knew about herself and along the way, what she wants out of life. I liked that the story took place in 1978-79, it was a time in my life I remember well, and can relate to Ava as a young woman during that time.
