5 stars. Neil Gaiman is a freaking genius! This book was so strange and bizarre and I loved every single minute of it. I can't put into words how much I enjoyed this. I went into this book not really knowing what to expect so I was definitely in for a rollercoaster. It went places I wasn't expecting and that's fine with me.

I'm having massive trouble trying to form a coherent review of this book. Gah.

Well, I absolutely loved it. It's my favorite Gaiman so far, (I'm only missing Anansi Boys & The Graveyard Book). But, there's not much reason why I should love this book as much as I do. Sure, it's epic, disturbing, weird, fantastical, but so are a lot of other books. What's this one got that those others do not? It works for me as much as it does, because it's written by a man who's new to America, who's doing his b I'm having massive trouble trying to form a coherent review of this book. Gah.

Well, I absolutely loved it. It's my favorite Gaiman so far, (I'm only missing Anansi Boys & The Graveyard Book). But, there's not much reason why I should love this book as much as I do. Sure, it's epic, disturbing, weird, fantastical, but so are a lot of other books. What's this one got that those others do not? It works for me as much as it does, because it's written by a man who's new to America, who's doing his best to understand this vast land. I know how difficult that is - US has no pyramids, no monuments, nothing that would actually signify that it has a history older than the colonists. What Gaiman does, in this book, is to provide America its history, albeit in a fantastical tale. It's a mammoth undertaking.

The old gods are vanishing, and the new gods (of technology, media etc.), are hell bent on hastening this process. An old god named Mr. Wednesday employs a man named Shadow to protect him while he goes around uniting the old gods to fight in a battle for their survival. Gaiman's America is a melting pot, not just for people, but for their beliefs as well. And the gods generally don't do well in America. (Except for Jesus, he's doing ok). That's basically the tale. The rest is detail. And in Gaiman's book, the devil is in the detail. Several delightful side characters, many interludes depicting the lives (and deaths) of long forgotten gods, and not the least, the sparse Midwest towns, and the places of their faith - their roadside attractions, make this a delightful journey.

There are problems with this book, I wouldn't say that it hasn't any. The main one is that the main characters are not really people you want to know. I liked Shadow, but he's a flat character for most of the book. We've no idea what he wants, what he's thinking. His dead wife Laura is even less sympathetic. Another is that the payoff, if you're waiting for it, might not feel like much. There's a beginning and end to the story, but what is really important here is the journey. For this reason, I think it's a definite two-time read at least. The journey is more enjoyable if you know what to expect. Recommend, read twice! ...more

Dabei erfährt er mehr über seine Herkunft und macht Bekanntschaft mit so manchen unglaublichen Phänomenen.

Eine Rezension zu American Gods zu schreiben fällt mir schwer. Mein Bauch sagt Wow, was für eine tolle Geschichte und jedes Mal wenn ich das Buch zur Hand nahm war ich ganz gefesselt von der Story. Mein Kopf hingegen versucht einen Sinn zu finden, einen Zusammenhang, eine Moral, aber ich finde da keine. Es ist ein Epos, ein Fantasyroman, ein Road Trip, ein Buch über Taschenspielertricks, ein Kriminalroman und noch so viel mehr. Es lässt sich einfach in keine Schublade pressen und ich glaube das ist der Grund warum mein Hirn sich uneins ist, was ich von dem Buch halten soll. Vielleicht einfach mal so hinnehmen, zurücklehnen und genießen. Manchen ist Shadow als Hauptfigur zu glatt, zu gut, ich hingegen fand ihn genau richtig, als Counterpart zu den ganzen Intrigen der Götter. Shadow ist gerade heraus, er lässt alles auf sich zukommen und hat seine Prinzipien. Mir war er durch und durch sympathisch. Die vielen kleinen Einschübe über die Immigranten in Amerika und ihre Götter, Fabelwesen, Kobolde und Dschinn, machen die Story noch greifbarer, es waren Geschichten in der Geschichte, die mir die Sicht der Götter auf die Welt verdeutlichten. Sie sind unter uns, und darben, weil ihnen die Opfergaben fehlen. Die modernen Menschen glauben eher an Geld, Technik und Macht und dennoch sind die neuen Götter naiv. Sie wollen einen Entscheidungskrieg um die Vorherrschaft ohne zu erkennen, dass auch ihre Zeit begrenzt ist. Nebenher habe ich auch begonnen, die Verfilmung des Epos zu schauen und bin begeistert, wie die Figuren umgesetzt wurden. Das Bild von Shadow hat zu dem im meinem Kopf gepasst. Dennoch ziehe ich das Buch der Verfilmung vor, denn ich habe das Gefühl das die ganze Tiefe der Charaktere nicht wirklich auf den Bildschirm gebannt werden kann.

Neil Gaimann, war mir vorher nur ein Begriff für Kinderbücher. Ich bin froh, dass ich auf American Gods gestoßen bin. Denn das ist wirklich mal eine Story der etwas anderen Art, die mich aus meiner Komfortzone geholt hat. Es wird bestimmt nicht das einzige Buch bleiben. ...more

I'm a bit behind with reading this. I have started and stopped reading it so many times that I cannot count. I always get hung up in the early middle. This time, with the television show about to premiere, I thought I would push through and finally figure out what Shadow and Wednesday are up to.

It is a long book so I was ready to dig deep this time. I listened to a full cast on audio and loved every minute.

What an interesting book.
Main story, with lots of side stories at times made it a little confusing, but over all they added to the whole wonderfully.
