Bright was the morn when I finished reading this book, its wintry chill lending a freshness to the air and everything around me. Heavy was my heart when I completed the book, not merely because of the contents that I had read as I finished but more because it felt like a dear friend, a rare and treasured jewel, had parted ways from me. Just the thought of Tolstoy and an 800+ page book has put me off approaching this book for awhile. It shouldn't have though-I found this lengthy classic quite easy to read and enjoy (unlike the few Dickens that I've read). There were still the tangents into political or religious philosophy but overall this is a love story- the destructive love between Anna Karenina and Vronsky and the pure love between Kitty and Levin. This is not a light read but still a very good one. Tolstoy has a firm grasp of the human condition, developing complex, multi-faceted characters that seem almost real.
