This is a book that you like as it is written very well, and it is fascinating but you also hate it because the events are horrifying. I almost threw my copy, I wanted to trow it at the wall out of anger. Not because Margaret Atwood wrote a bad novel but because she wrote a believable novel, and that's scary. As a woman the idea of living this is terrifying and sickening. I applaud Ms. Atwood for being able to make me feel and picture this world so clearly. This is my second novel by this author ...more

First published in 1986, Atwood’s novel describes an America much different but easily imaginable from today’s democracy. Offred tells her story of life as a Handmaid, in the Republic of Gilead, a monotheocracy, run by the Sons of Jacob. Several friends have been nagging me for years to read this novel and I finally got around to it because I want to finish things in 2019. So I finished their request and they were right! This book is amazing. First off, the writing is clever, erudite, descriptive, and brilliant. Secondly, the story is awesome. So interesting, captivating, horrifying, fascinating, and terrifying all at once. I found it gripping and cautionary. So good!
(caution for gentle readers: strong language & violent scenes)

Surprised how close the tv series stayed to the book. Elizabeth Moss did a wonderful job of the narration

Looking forward to listening to The Testaments to see what happened to Offred.

I liked the whole dystopian feel but I wanted it to amount to something like the narrator getting pregnant or something. I’m not really sure what I wanted to happen but just something. I want to know what happened to her husband and daughter. How did it get to the extreme that it did? In the end I am glad I read it because it is considered a classic but now I understand why I put it ...more
